I was pleasantly surprised recently when I was contacted by Lindsey of CardstockEquine on Artfire and told I won a prize! Lindsey had conducted a contest on Facebook and I didn't even know I was included! You can imagine how surprised I was...I'm not what you call "lucky"...I'm the type of person that if I buy a scratch-off, I fully expect it to read "Please pay an additional dollar to clerk"...LOL.

The prize I won was a set of gorgeous thank you cards and my choice of another greeting card. Lindsey had so many beautiful items, it was hard to choose. I ended up choosing a photo card with a flamingo, thinking this would be the perfect card for my sis, who loves flamingos (and I'm hoping she's not reading this!)...

Here are the cards that I received...the thank you cards are so stunning...they shimmer and the quality is superb. Pictures won't do them justice, so you'll just have to order some for yourself to see how beautiful they are!

I want to thank Lindsey, and wish her every success with her ArtFire shop. Her work is top notch, beautiful, and of high quality. If you love horses, you have to check her out!

Snow Plows from Hell...

They come in the night, shaking the ground like an earthquake. I know there's a contest to see which snow plow driver can inflict the most damage on homeowners. I witnessed one going about 50 mph racing past my house like the hounds of hell were after him... I believe it's some kind of test. "Does picking up speed catapult the snow farther into their yards?"....why, yes, Horatio, it does:

This was our driveway (we have a drive-thru half circle...or did, at one time) after the plow came through. My son and I had just shoveled, so I KNOW it was not hip deep at that time...LOL. You can actually SEE where he stopped and made several "pushes" to shove the snow right up to the wall of the portico!!! The nerve!

Now, I know they have a tough job, right? I mean, it's hard to make really good money working for the town, with benefits and all. But do they have to TRY to destroy your yard, mailboxes, and driveway access? Yes, I believe they do. It's like an unwritten rule or something. If you want to drive a plow, you have to be either mean or a really, really bad driver to begin with.

Here's a good example of how he came down the road..if you look further up in the pic, you'll see the "line" he was following. You can see it starting to curve over so he does the most damage in front of my house! It's like he purposefully CUT IN to come onto my actual lawn...it's a little hard to see, but look just to the right of that parked car to see the angle of the plow blade...then look closer to my house in the forefront of the pic... you can see the angle clearly cutting in!

So here's what I'm gonna do...I think next winter, right after the first light snowfall, I'll put up spike strips. Let's see how fast he goes after that!! LOL...wouldn't you LOVE to see that one? Just kidding, of course, but in my mind, I've run that scenario over and over...hahahahahaha

This whole thing amazes me, as last year they tore up my lawn, they set the plow so low and cut too far in. People told me I was crazy if I thought they were going to do anything to rectify it. Well, they trotted their little butts down and graded my lawn. Now, don't you think they might have learned something from that experience? I am a force to be reckoned with! Needless to say, we'll be having a little "chat" this week! Maybe I'll apply for the job. Hell, I can do at least a comparable job, don't you think? I mean, apparently you don't have to really know what you're doing, so I'm sure I could qualify...hmmmm.....

Okay, well, thanks for letting me vent...if any of you who live in snow country have the same problem with their snow plows, please leave your thoughts!!

And if you don't live in snow country? Consider yourselves lucky!

Christmas Across the Globe

This is fantastic! Pictures of Christians celebrating Christmas around the world...I especially liked #34. That little girl is homeless, and look at her face! How serene. Pray for all the homeless... it is NOT a choice they make! I can't imagine people wanting to live in the butt chappin' cold with their children, without a warm bed, food, or security. Her face reinforced my belief that every day we see miracles. Her happiness in that picture proves it.

I wish all of you the happiest of New Year's!!

I pray our troops come home, the homeless find relief, and people everywhere will learn to work together for the greater good...just a dream, I'm sure, but it's a good one.

I plan to reopen an Etsy shop as well, so check back for updates on that. I've been gone from Etsy for quite a while, but decided to give it another shot.

Merry Christmas!!

Won't be long now....HoHo will be coming down the chimney to leave me those tickets to Figi...haha. I hope your Christmas is filled with family, friends, peace and joy. Try to breathe and remember to take time out to remember the "reason for the season".

With all the "politically correct" terms now for a sacred holiday, I am not ashamed to say the words, "Merry CHRISTmas"!! It's the very reason FOR the holiday, as I'm sure many of you will agree. Makes you wonder, doesn't it? All these people who think we should be saying "Happy Holidays" to "respect" others' beliefs. Well....if you don't believe in Christ, then what holiday is it exactly that you're celebrating???

One of my resolutions for 2011 is to keep my blog more up to date. I've been remiss in posting, as show season had me scrambling. I promise to be back in the new year with more information, more humor and more helpful posts. I want to start promoting other artisans here as well, so please do check back. Our handmade community on ArtFire, and It's Better Handmade consists of some of the finest artisans around. So remember to take a peek from time to time. You may find that perfect gift for someone, or yourself!!

I will also be posting some tutorials from time to time on helpful show tips, displays, techniques, etc. Feel free to send me your ideas...anything you'd like to see or learn about. When I first set up my blog, I got advice from people that said, "Don't make it about your business...people want to know you." Well, that's good in theory, but when you're an artisan, that IS you! Being an artisan is a big part of my life, and if I can't share that, then what's the point?!

Didja miss me?

Well, all, it's been a "hurry up" kind of summer! The show season is starting to slow down just a tad, and I have some time to do my "connecting" with the outside world!

I started a new collection on ArtFire of various artisans' work. The link is to the right of the blog page here. There are so many talented people running around the planet. I wanted to share their work with you. I may be making this a regular thing here, so check back from time to time...you never know what treasures await your perusal!

The leaves are just starting to change here in upstate NY...which is rare, since usually by now we have tons of red and gold on our maples and oaks. I'm not rushing winter, mind you, but I would love to see some more color! I have a feeling this will go like our springs do...we have about seven months of winter, five minutes of spring, a couple decent summer months, five minutes of fall, and back to winter....welcome to New York.

Well, as you can see, it's another late night...back to Elvira status, I guess. The vampire-like sleep patterns are apparently attacking my routine again. Menopause is rearing its ugly head. And belly, and thighs....one day I woke up and looked like the Michelin Man. I'm still better off than some of the guys that have the brick hard beer gut, but I have to tell you, I miss my flat tummy. With English and Czechoslovakian grandmothers, there was really nothing I could do about my rear end. I was doomed right out of the gate. "Cute baby, Margaret, but wow...look at that butt!"

However, I always said, "Well, at least I have a flat stomach"....NOW what can I say??? "Well, at least I have....what, high blood pressure? edema from time to time in the legs? an extra crow's foot? Good Lord, turn 50 and it's like a switch that's been laying dormant for all these years goes off in your system..."Ok everyone! Listen up! This is the day we've been waiting for. She finally hit the half century mark and we need to start going down the list of ailments. Bob, you give her that extra inflatable horse toy around her belly...Stewart, you get up there and crease that face!, oh! and add another chin while you're up there... Howard, go to the legs and shut 'em down. Make sure you block off all exits for that water she drank...let her pee before the dam breaks, but make sure you leave enough in the legs so they look like a clay sculpture gone bad, and last but not least, let's all mess with her sleep, shall we? It'll be fun...we can drive her slowly insane..."

If you're reading this and you're over 50, you know this is not too far from the truth! What is it about that magical age that causes most of us to feel like we were thrown under a bus? Oh well, at least I can still see my feet!

It's been a wonderful summer, really. My sis visited from CA again this year, and it was so, so good to just see her face every day! I burned her image into my brain to carry me through til the "next time"....whenever that might be. I am one to see the glass half full, and I treat each day as a blessed gift...yes, even with the clay legs. But I always take pause when we've said goodbye at the airport and wonder if this will be the last time we see each other. Morbid? No, not really. Just another affliction that creeps its way into your thoughts as you get older. But alas, we are back to our routine, missing one another, but used to it, nonetheless. Gotta play that lotto. Then I'll have my own jet...LOL.

Let's see...what else has filled these summer days....it's hard to gather up anything exciting to tell you, since it's been filled mostly with the lugging, setting up, tearing down, and bull work of doing shows! You'd have thought I might have lost a little of that "inflatable horse toy", wouldn't you? No such luck....and now we're into the "comfort foods" of the fall and winter seasons! Ah, well, I have so much to be grateful for, like the fact that I can still work my back into position to get out of bed in the morning (or whatever time constitutes my "morning" lately)....the glass is half full.

I hope your glass is half full as well, and if you suffer from the "Over 50 Ailments" list, my heart goes out to you. I know there's a lot of spry, healthy 70 year olds out there, but to you, I say, "You must not have charged into your day and beat the hell out of it like we did!"...so I will live with this extra toy, chin and clay-like legs, as long as I'm LIVING!! Carpe Diem! I wish you all a splendidly colorful fall season. No matter where you live, try to find something new to see every day. That way, you'll have more to forget when you get Alzheimer's and it might slow the process down...:-)

Has it really been this long?

Wow...have I been gone a while or what?! Can't believe it's been since June that I posted last. Been a busy summer, loads of shows.

Still seem to be on a dead run, and will post more as things settle down. The grueling pace of the summer has finally caught up with me! Hope you all have a wonderful holiday weekend...and don't forget to check out my ArtFire studio...I'm having a SALE through Monday the 6th!

Sigourney Weaver update....

Well, folks....still haven't heard anything from the Sigourney Weaver camp... I find this very disheartening. When I gifted her the earrings, I thought surely I would receive some kind of response, even if it was just a generic one from her "assistant", or whomever does her publicity work.

I have to wonder about people...my mother would slap me silly if I did not acknowledge a gift. But then, we are just "regular folks", unlike the "stars". I guess common courtesy is a thing of the past with them. I learned a valuable lesson...I won't be bothering to do this ever again! At least I can say that I would rather be "regular" and have manners.

Oh well, it was worth a shot. I know that what she received was made with great care, and would be a welcomed gift by anyone. Unfortunately, I guess no one told her that responding in some way would be the right thing to do.....

Onward and upward....did the Cobblestone Winery Cherry Festival in Romulus this past weekend...what a blast! The music was outstanding, the grounds were gorgeous, and I even had a customer share their wine with me! Great wine, by the way. I plan to go down there with my sis when she visits from California in August. Will definitely be there next year...for any of you local artisans, this is a show you must check out! The only thing I could see that was wrong was the inclusion of "Silpata" (sp) jewelry...NOT handmade. Burns my buns when they are allowed to do the handmade shows....

Okay, well, lots to do and I have a couple custom orders to fill, so that's it for today...maybe something exciting will happen this week that I'll be able to share with you all. Yeah, right....

It's Better Handmade....

Hi all,

Well, another show weekend come and gone...should have stayed home with this one! I think if ten people walked through the door, I'd be a little high in that estimate...needless to say, it was NOT a good day! Hopefully next weekend will bring prosperity...for all you locals, the show next weekend is in Romulus, NY at the Cobblestone Winery...it's their annual Cherry Festival and there will be tons to do, including kids activities...so come on down and peruse some fine artisans, and have some fun! Maybe even pick some cherries.

I wanted to share with you a group I am a part of on Facebook. It's called "It's Better Handmade Group" and consists of over 2,000 members now! It was started by a Colorado friend of mine, Susan Adams and another friend in Spain/UK, Vicki Diane. It's a great bunch of people, artisans and laymen alike and we have so much fun every week. There are special days, like "Color Me Friday" where a new color is chosen each week, and we promote our own and others' work in that particular color. Then there's "GoGreen Wednesday" and "Sea Shell Sunday"....

Sigourney Weaver at the Founders Day Celebration...

What a wonderful day! Not only did the weather cooperate, which was questionable when the thunderstorm we had that morning had rain pounding back up from the ground about a foot, but we we able to enjoy Sigourney Weaver's press conference.

I felt like a kid at Christmas! We all know how difficult "celebrity" can be, as I have imagined myself in their place many times...unable to go to the grocery store without a mob of people accosting me, etc. I don't think I'd be comfortable in that role. Ms. Weaver touched briefly on the subject of being in that role herself.

She spoke of the oil spill crisis, the movies, and also one of my own loves...the Adirondacks. My son and I lived in Old Forge, at the beginning of the Adirondack Park, and apparently, Ms. Weaver loves them as well. She mentioned Blue Mountain Lake, which by the way, if you ever get the chance, you must visit the museum there...it's fabulous! I was hoping for a chance to speak with her more on the Adirondacks, as they hold a special place in my heart as well. Unfortunately, time was short and her assistant seemed to be on edge about people getting too close.

If you look at the pics below, you will see she had many capable men as her bodyguards...wouldn't mind them in tow for me! ;-)

One of the coordinators of the celebration, Sheli Graney, arranged through Ms. Weaver's security for me to give her a gift of jewelry. Needless to say, I was very giddy. What is it about celebrities that turns us into jello? At the beginning of the press conference, I approached her to give her the gift, as pre-arranged, but her assistant stopped me. I was very disappointed about that... I explained that it had been cleared through her security, but apparently, he didn't get the memo...haha..

In any case, the bag you see him holding in one of the pics holds my gifts. Did you ever struggle with "what to get" for someone? Well, add stardom to the mix and you'll know what I went through. I did some research on Ms. Weaver, and discovered that she is not a fan of necklaces...only in movie shots did I see her wearing any. So that was out...okay, onto bracelets...but now, what is her wrist size? And on it went...the battle with the "is this good enough?", "does she like pearls?", "is she a fan of silver?" and on and on....

When I was about certifiable and ready for the nuthouse, I finally settled on two pair of earrings I had already created. For those of you familiar with my ArtFire Studio, you may remember the "From Another Era" copper and freshwater pearl earrings... very elegant and perfect for her coloring...then there were other pics of her where she wore some "in your face" earrings, which is exactly the kind of thing I love to create!, so I also included the "Ethnic Swirl" brass verdigris earrings.

Of course, the whole time I see her assistant holding the bag, my instinct was to snatch it back and do something "better"... I guess it's natural to want someone of her caliber to have your best work. After scaring him half to death with my approach to begin with, I gave him a break and resisted the urge to grab the bag...I'm sure he's relieved.

All in all, it was a very successful day...the music was great, the food was varied and delicious, and everyone seemed to be having a good time. Naturally, my dream is to have Ms. Weaver actually WEAR the earrings I gave her...that would be the highest compliment one could receive. And what artisan wouldn't swoon over a picture of her with them on....but that remains to be seen, folks.

I found Ms. Weaver to be very "human", and easy to be around. We have to remind ourselves that even celebrities have their worries, troubles, sadness, and possibly more problems than the rest of us. She was very graceful and I admire her greatly. She's "real"...that's the best description I can give. Nothing would give me more pleasure than to sit and chat about our beloved Adirondacks, to see what we have in common there... but alas, I am just an artisan with a long way to go before I am famous (I'm working on it!), and she was pressed for time....

She did mention, however, that the coordinators of the show have something "big" in the works for next year, so any of you locals, please don't miss the celebration next year!

Stay tuned for more pics...a friend of mine, Donny Lawler, who works for the Citizen had taken a pic of me handing the bag off, but the crowd was thick and we're not sure how that came out...also, I'm hoping for a response from Ms. Weaver, and secretly (well, now not so secretly) hoping for a pic of her in my creations...so stop back later on...I may have my wish at some point. If not, well, I'm still happy I got to speak with her briefly, and will remember it always as being one of the best experiences I've had. I wish her every joy and success, and hope she will remember us kindly.

Sigourney Weaver to be at my next show!!

Hi folks!

Great news! Next week is the 2nd Annual Founders Day Celebration in Auburn, NY, and the theme is "The Birthplace of Talking Movies"..Sigourney Weaver will be the guest speaker!

We all know what an awesome actress she is, and I'm hoping to score a meet with her! Auburn is my hometown, and I'm impressed at the ability of the show's coordinators to be able to secure such amazing speakers.

Last year Sarah Palin came to town for the anniversary of the Alaska Purchase. William Seward was from Auburn and if you get the chance, do go and take the tour through his mansion!! It's something to see. I remember going there with my schoolmates back in the 70's and being completely in awe of the furnishings and the mansion as a whole. To think people actually lived in this opulence still amazes me!

So, any of you upstate New Yorkers...get to downtown Auburn on the 12th for a real treat. There will also be great music, dance, and of course, fabulous artisans! The show is from 11 am to 6 pm, and the music continues until 9 pm....

More like summer....

Gorgeous day here today! We're seeing summer-like weather...and it's about time! How many of us doing early shows end up setting up and tearing down in the rain? I'm sure everyone has had that experience....I remember being soaked to the skin (literally) last year during such weather. The winds were hurricane force and the rain? Well, it was sideways! Needless to say, that was NOT a prosperous day for any of us!

I wish I had loads of new and exciting posts for you, but I'm afraid my days now consist of getting ready for the fully booked summer shows. You can imagine me strapped to my work table, bleary eyed, looking like something the cat dragged in....but it's all worth it! For any of you who depend on meeting the public and getting your name "known", summer is our peak season.

Unfortunately, it comes at a cost to family and friends. My son is at the age where he can be fine alone, of course, and most teenagers only miss us when they need something, but I still miss being with him on the weekends. I try not to drag him with me to the shows, as he acquires this glazed look about 20 minutes into the show, unless we're jumping.... I think now he's just grateful he doesn't have to go! Maybe I'll shake him up a bit and drag him to a couple of the bigger ones. I have a couple that draw over 15,000 people, so he should be good and busy at those!

I have been busy creating pieces for the shows, and haven't had much time to chat. Sorry about that. It seems like nothing is really ever new here at the "Cat House"...lol. Spring is trying to arrive, but we've had plenty of wind and rain this season. We had 80's in March, and 40's in May...go figure.

I will try to post more often, but please feel free to contact me with any questions on my studio, my work, upcoming shows, etc. I am happy to share information with fellow artisans.

With the Fair Haven Craft Fair and Benefit coming up the end of the month, I've been uber busy with details in the planning, collecting donations, etc...as has my co-host. So, when I get a chance to work, I have to crank it out! She's not dead.....

Hello all! I have not fallen off the face of the planet! Been crazy busy...just answering the 100 emails a day (no kidding) is daunting.

Spring has finally sprung, I think! We're looking at some pretty awesome weather coming up this weekend! Into the high 70's and 80's they say! YaHOOO! So sick of the white stuff!

Okay, having said that, here's the news...been stocking up for summer show pieces...so much so that now I wonder if there will be anything left in the kitty to actually pay for the shows I bought the supplies to make things for! haha... All you artisans out there know from where I speak, right? After the winter doldrums, it's nice to launch a new spring line.

I have kept in touch with some gals that did Lisa's One World, One Heart Giveaway this past January....made some great friends from all over the place, including England, Scotland and across the US. Very profitable blogging experience when you come away with friends you didn't have before it!

Well, I should probably get into bed, as my sleeping patterns have been off so much lately (thank you Eve...first we bleed for years at a time, and now menopause is rearing it's ugly head with weight gain, insomnia and the like... ;- o

I will close with a few pics of some recent work...stay tuned for some more as time progresses...now that I'm "stocked", all I have to do is find time to sit and work! Easier said than done....

The Thrill of Victory...and the Agony of Defeat!

Well, folks, looks like the truth wins every time...all you have to do is sit tight and let it happen!

I have been totally vindicated with the purchasing fiasco with the seller referenced in the previous post. Suffice it to say, she hung herself. Her intentions were to tear down my good name, and what ended up happening was her own battle began to keep what dignity she has.

I want to thank those that stood up for the truth. It's wonderful to realize that there are still those that will risk all to speak their mind. I applaud you. For those of you who have no idea what's going on...please refer to the previous post. As I said there, I will not name names or any other information that would reveal this woman's identity. I will NOT play on her dirty playing field. I have more integrity than that.

Those that know what's happened, know that this is my way of saying "thank you". I can only pray that the person who thought it necessary to drag me through her personal vendetta drama is reading this and has learned that this is not the way....it's not the way to conduct yourself in business, and it's certainly not the way to conduct yourself in life. Your insatiable thirst for ruining people has bitten you squarely on the backside, as it should be.

Give up your rotten ways, woman, or you will never be a success! Learn from this, and grow...you can change if you want to. There has to be some good left in that Grinch of a heart. Change now, or you will waste slowly away....it's like a poison inside you...all that rage and vindictiveness. Release it and see how much better you feel. And if you feel you can't, or just "won't", then I feel sorry for you. But I will never be one of your victims again.

I post this final bit as a warning to you...I will not be so kind if anything further hinders my business or my reputation. Take this to heart. I am a forgiving woman, as that is how we are instructed to live, but I am also no fool....let's be clear on that. I can assume, then, that this debacle is over?

For the rest of you that have always stood by me, and for those strangers who had the courage to defend what was clearly unwarranted vehemence directed toward me, a thousand thanks.

The tangled webs we weave....

Well, I wasn't going to give this issue any momentum, but I feel it needs to be put out there....

Recently I had an unfortunate experience with a seller on ArtFire. Unlike this woman, I will not post her shop name and email address on this blog as she did on the site she runs, quite a large group of people. The sale went south when I received inferior product, and ended up with my business name and email address posted on this large site for all to see.

This woman felt it necessary to include only portions of certain emails that I sent to her, making me look like a beast to the site's members. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I'm a firm believer in freedom of the press and speech, however, maligning someone without giving ALL the pertinent details of an issue, is just plain cowardly. To paint one's self as a "victim" when in fact, you are the one victimizing another is deplorable.

With no way to defend myself on her site, as only members can post, I felt adrift. I did come by information regarding this post, and the responses to it, from a source that will forever be my hero. Standing up and doing the right thing isn't always easy, and I applaud anyone who tries to right an injustice.

I have spent years building a business, and my good name. To have this attacked online for people to see is one of the most heinous things an artisan can do to another. For those of you who have happened upon this blog, and are a member of her site...you know who you are...I just want to say that perhaps you should not pass judgment on someone without knowing you have all the facts. For those of you who chose to respond with a quick defense of your "leader", shame on you. You are like sheep going to the slaughter and I pray you will never be the recipient of this woman's vindictive ways.

I have a sterling reputation and will not allow someone to tear it down without some recourse, hence this post. I was willing to let the fiasco of that transaction go until I learned of the post on the site. Then all bets were off. I have a right to defend myself, and anyone who would like the full story, the truth, is welcome to contact me. I have nothing to hide, and find it ludicrous that I need to defend myself at all.

I would not give this person the time of day, except for the fact that deformation of character is a serious offense, and needs to be addressed, not only in public, as I'm doing here, but with possible legal ramifications as well. This is no small offense, people. We all know how long the arm of the internet is, and for those of us who depend on it, public opinion and our reputations are all we have.

I ask anyone who has had a problem similar to mine to contact me. If anyone has any questions as to the details of this issue, I'm afraid I won't stoop to the level this woman has by maligning her and putting her name and shop online for all to see, as that would bring me down to her level. She is clearly lacking in some part of the brain that gives us a conscience, and for that I am sorry for her.

Being targeted by someone like this was distressing, however, I have given it all the attention it's going to get. I have to chalk it up to another one of life's lessons.

Thank you for reading, and I hope this will be enough to reassure my future customers that I am not the person that is portrayed so viciously by this woman. I strive to bring truth to light and will continue to do so. You know the old saying, right? "The truth shall set you free"...and that's the point of this post. I am now free of this worry and strife. To expound any further on it is giving it credence and I will not give it any more momentum that it has already received.

Chatty Cat isn't so chatty lately...

Well, believe it or not, I haven't had anything to say lately...hard to believe I know. It must be the weather. As we speak, I'm trying to get the fire going in the wood stove so we can warm it up in here. As the weather improves outside, the inside temp is still chilly... and damp. So, I thought I'd let the fire die down and clean out the stove good....yeah, right. Now that it had been "out", getting it going again without it being cold enough outside is a joke. All it does is smoke....well, that's one way to get me to do laundry. hahahahaha. The dryer warms it up in here!

Okay, folks, well, hope everyone's having a good week...pray for spring. In fact, we can skip spring and move right into summer for all I care. Except for the sheets on the line smelling the best in the spring, I can't think of any reason to endure mud season!

Keep an eye on my ArtFire Studio...I'm starting to get some pieces done for the spring line...also, I'm listing supplies (a bit) from my overstocked work room!

Tomorrow's the day!!!

I had a thought....yes, that's what that burning smell was.. I was thinking about our "critters" here at the house...if you have any rescue, adoption, or other success story on how you acquired your pet, please share it here. I think it's so important to find animals that need our help and adopt them. All my life I've wanted a Golden Retriever and an Aussie, but they come from breeders most of the time. Seldom do you see them in a pound. Therefore, to date, I have not filled that "want".

I get great satisfaction from going to the SPCA and letting the animal "pick me". Any of you that have had that experience know what I mean. We think we choose? Ha. That's funny. You know the one that will be going home with you because it's usually not the one you had come in to look for!

I remember one time many years ago in California, my friend, sister, and I had gone to the local pound to look for my friend's pet that had been missing since the earthquake we had. While there, I saw the most beautiful dog, I believe she was either a Malamute or a similar breed (this was the early 80's so my memory isn't that fresh!), and she was absolutely stunning! Her owners had to move out of the area because of job relocation, and where they were going did not allow dogs. They had to leave her there...how heartbreaking. Now, to add insult to injury to this obviously loved pet, she was scheduled to be euthanized in three days. No way was I going to let that happen.

So, we took Sheba (her given name by previous family) home. That night, while walking her, I took a chance. She was wearing a bandana as a makeshift collar, as I hadn't had time to go to the store to buy supplies, other than dog food. I had the leash attached to the bandana, and decided to take it off so she could have a little run. Mind you, I'm taking a huge chance here that she might run away. We had a little chat, and I explained to her that if she ran away, I couldn't protect her from the people that might put her right back into where she just came from!

I let her go, she bounded down the street, and immediately panic set in! I couldn't be yelling at the top of my lungs, as we lived in a residential neighborhood and it was late, so I just said, "Sheba!" a bit louder than normal conversational tone....do you know what that dog did? You are NOT going to believe this! This amazing animal trotted back to my side and sat down!! Just sat down!! Boy, somebody spent a lot of time with her. She was the most obedient, gentle soul. I think she was so happy to be out of prison, that she figured out I was there to help, not hurt.

But, alas, there is always a sad part to most every story. My friend already had a little dog, and she said that it would be impossible for us to keep Sheba. If you've ever been to California, you'd know they're famous for their expansive front lawns and postage stamp size back yards. This beautiful creature needed room to run and play, and we honestly could not provide that. We both worked full time, and she would be in the house all day.

My friend suggested we give her to a family she knew that lived in the country. They had a little boy, a toddler, that would grow up with Sheba, and she would have a better life there. I can tell you, that was one of the worst and best days of my life. Of course I gave her to them. How could I justify keeping her cramped when she could have a little boy and a farm? Cry, cry, cry...I was so attached already, but I knew that it was best for her. So, off she went to her new home. We did hear about her progress occasionally, and she was thriving. I know I made the right decision, and I'm thankful for being allowed the chance to make a difference in her life.

We can all be catalysts for those animals that are unable to help themselves. I can't even look at the TV when the commercials for the SPCA come on. I could cry or throw up. Very emotional. So, in my own way, I do what I can. That's why I ended up with two out of four animals that were either neglected, abused, or abandoned. I'd much rather have an animal in one of those categories join our family, than the "pure breed" dog I longed for over the years. There's a sense of "right" when you take an animal home that you know had a crappy life. The love they will show you will far outweigh anything you've ever experienced.

I would be like Dr. Doolittle if I had a bigger house. I purposefully don't go into the local shelters here because I know I'll be coming home with eleven animals! haha. Nowhere to put them! But, if each of us could just adopt one animal in need, imagine the reduction in deaths of these beautiful gifts from God. So, think about it, will you? Do you have room for one little creature that will love you til the day they die? You can make a huge difference in their lives, and all you have to do is go there and let them "pick you"!! Now, get moving!!!

If you can believe this, I actually don't have much to chat about! Yes, that's right...Chatty Cat is, well, mum. During the winters here, it's like time stands still....

For those of you who blog daily, I applaud you! What it must be like to have a social life..haha. Around here, the cold causes us to become "homebodies" almost to the hermit stage! But alas! The sun is shining and it's a great day to get out and breathe the crisp, winter air. I think our big galoot of a dog, Sid, will be especially happy this shiny day, as he knows a walk is in his future. I could do with more of those myself!

I found a great web site called DailyLearners.com. Wonderful quotes about education and life. Check it out...you can get widgets for your sites!

For all you locals in the upstate New York area, I will be listing the upcoming shows around the Finger Lakes and western NY. A Coming Together

Yesterday was my dear friend Angela's funeral service....it was wonderful to see all those people I care deeply for, even under the saddest of circumstances. I could feel Angela in every corner of that church. You don't think she'd miss that, do you?! I could picture her taking it all in, chuckling at the comments of some, scolding others.... when the priest started to talk about Angela, he really nailed her personality.

He had the opportunity to visit her at the hospital before she passed, and even though she was unable to speak (torture for her), he got the idea that she was ready to go. He noted her frustration with her muteness, and we all agreed that Ange wouldn't have wanted a life of "existence". This was a woman that personified the adage "Carpe Diem". Boy howdy, did she ever seize HER days! So, being reduced to a weakened individual without the luxury of communication through speech, was not going to be the acceptable life for our friend. Indeed, if she could not seize every day with her usual vigor, then I believe she really was ready to go.
I take comfort in that, and know that she is happy and free. We cry because we will miss her with all our hearts. I could not stop my own emotions from taking over periodically throughout the day. Not surprisingly, I wasn't the only one. Angela was so loved in that community, and she truly touched people from all walks of life.

There was a young man who came into the church with a poncho and a substantial fur hat like they wear in Siberia. Well, Old Forge being what it is, small town and sometimes peppered with small minds, there were audible murmurs and little gasps. As if to convey, "What is HE doing here?". I didn't know this man, but I know Angela did. I remember sitting on her porch and talking about a young man that apparently took a shine to Angela. She explained that he was thought of around town as being a little "strange", and that people avoided him. Not our Angela. She had her own mind and made her own character analysis of people.

Imagine, this young man, whom everyone thought was so "strange", an opinion I am quite sure he was made aware of, bothered to take the time out of his day to say goodbye to someone he admired. At this time I would like to point out that there were many people whom I remember from our time living in Old Forge that did NOT show up. Now I find THAT strange. This man, knowing he looked...God forbid...different, took his hat off, and smoothed his hair while he stood in line to greet the family. I don't find that "strange" at all. I find it hopeful. Hopeful that there are more people like him in this world, willing to put themselves up to ridicule from the small Peyton Place mentality, in order to pay respects to someone who treated them with decency and respect. May all those that gasped, commented, made fun, or otherwise thought unkind thoughts about this man learn something from his courage. If Jesus walked among us now, would he try to blend? Or could he very well come in the "strange" package that this man walked in? Food for thought.

So, in closing, I would like to remind all of my readers to be kind to those you might at first consider "strange" or "different". They may be the only ones at your funeral. Angela was an amazing woman with the capacity to love without boundaries. I will strive each day to make her proud of me.

Remembering Angela

A very dear friend passed away this week, and the world lost a little bit of its light. Angela was the type of person that stole your heart before you knew what was happening. She had a sharp, sometimes wicked (!) sense of humor, didn't mince words, and had a laugh that was so infectious, before you knew it, you found yourself cracking up.

Ange was always there to smooth the rough edges, join in the fun, correct a negative behavior, or bring common sense to hysteria...she knew dwelling on or ranting about something wasn't going to fix it. She had this way of putting things into perspective that left you feeling relieved, even if the situation was not resolved.

When I was pregnant with my son, I was fretting about what I was going to do since his father was no longer in the picture. I remember I was to the "hand wringing" stage, and Angela looked at me with what I like to call "the look", and said simply, "What are you worried about? God feeds the birds, doesn't He?". That simple statement, said with such conviction, immediately switched my gears. That was over sixteen years ago, and I remember it like it was yesterday. I recall those simple words again and again when I am feeling anxious or stressed. Angela was my rock, and I'm not sure she knew to what extent.

There will be a hole in the place that Angela occupied in my heart. She touched so many people in so many different ways, yet she would argue with me about that if she were here now. She was most definitely one of a kind...a rare gem in an otherwise harsh world. I will miss her every day, but I thank God He brought us together those many years ago. I am the better for knowing her. God Bless you, Angela, and may you find the peace and wholeness you so richly deserve. I will love you all of my life.

Adding Insult to Injury

I've done it now....you remember the icicle fiasco, right? Today I pushed the envelope and stacked nearly five cords of wood myself. I'm not Wonder Woman, but I have to say I did a pretty good job of getting it done without passing out. Although, toward the end, my arms felt like Gumby. I swear they were a couple inches longer, too.

Getting Too Old For This!!

Well, folks, it's official...I am not the youngin' I used to be! You know, I'll be the big "five-oh" this month, and even though the brain is thirtysomething, the body is rebelling. With gusto, I might add!

I should have taken pics before I knocked them down, but the icicles hanging off the roof were the size of my truck. They looked like solid walls of ice. Apparently, I have to have the gutter situation addressed next summer.... In any case, here I am, grandpa's ancient heavy shovel in hand, swinging at these behemoths like Xena, Warrior Princess. No kidding, that was some defiant ice.

Austin volunteered to do it for me, but, having experience with how these monsters can become deadly projectiles to windows and limbs, I declined his offer. I got my exercise for the week just by leaping out of the way. Landed on more than one body part in hip deep snow several times....but alas! I emerged victorious. Some of the heaviest, thickest ones are just amputated now, but for the most part, they succumbed to my prowess.

Now, aren't you glad you tuned in for this daily droll? Come on, admit it....you've been right where I was this afternoon. At least you have if you live in the snow belt! I won't even get into what the roof looks like. It must have three feet of snow hanging over the sides. Hoping that slides forward toward the street and not at the spot where I drive in and out or we'll have a wall of snow blocking any exit!

Wow...I have to get out more. When snow on the roof and killer icicles are the height of my day, something's wrong with this picture! Time to venture on!

It's still snowing those big chunky fluffy gifts from Heaven! We were all surprised that the kids even had school today. Not even a delay. Austin told me a bus slid out of control and recovered, so no crash, but what are they thinking??? Apparently, they're more worried about getting state funding than protecting the kids.

It hasn't stopped snowing at all for the last three days...pretty, but this is getting ridiculous! I'd love to hear from any of you that also live in a snow belt! Looks like there's more to come this week. Even Florida is cold! But there's no global warming, eh? Pretty soon we'll be back in the Ice Age!

Still Snowing!!

Still coming down steadily here in upstate NY! We went from no snow to OMG!! We're not even sure if the kids will be going back to school today! Which, of course, would not break their hearts, I'm sure. Poor Henry (toy poodle) went out the door last night in his little shearling lined coat, took one look at the height of the snow, looked at me behind the door, and proceeded to squat right there on the porch! If he'd have gone down the steps, I think he would have sunk up to his axles in snow! That would have been hilarious for us humans, but I don't think he'd have been amused.

The last pic is of our back porch. The others are friends' houses on Main St. That was quite the storm! With so many pines surrounding us, we were lucky not to have holes in the roof. Awesome storm, though...Mother Nature was ticked that day!

WE'RE BURIED!

Holy cow!!! We're getting buried here by Lake Ontario! The universe must have known I had to travel today on lousy tires. Well, needless to say, that trip is postponed! Ordinarily I love the snow, but this is nuts! It's that heavy, wet stuff that is like driving on Crisco. I have 4wd, but come on!! This is chains weather! You'd think we'd be used to this by now...

I'm hearing snowmobiles outside right now...that's the way to go in this winter wonderland! I remember sledding in Colorado. My ex and son and I would go up to Rabbit Ears Pass with the sleds and spend all day. How fabulous that was. You can imagine the view from that perspective. I never thought about the chance of avalanches until much later...haha. If you ever get a chance to visit Steamboat Springs, CO, DO IT! It is definitely a playground for snow lovers.

Rabbit Ears Pass is aptly named. As you've probably guessed, the pass formation looks like...rabbit ears, of course! Something quite spectacular to see, but driving over the pass in stormy weather with a man who thought he was indestructible was a challenge. I was the "backseat driver" the whole way, and my jaws hurt once we got to our destination because I had unknowingly had them clenched the whole trip. Men.

Well, folks, if you live in a snow belt, snuggle up with your favorite blanket and a cuppa something hot and enjoy the snowbound day!

The Day After......

Well??? Is everyone alive and kickin'? haha. I was smart and stayed home last night. Been feeling a little under the weather, so I had to beg off a party we were invited to. I remember the old days, though...party til dawn. Boy howdy...those days are long gone!

My son was laughing at us...we didn't even watch "the ball drop". He seemed a little disappointed, which surprised me. He's 16, and every year before this, we would at least watch the Times Square celebration when it got close to midnight. He mentioned tradition, so chalk this up to another faux pas that his mother did. I wish these kids came with a manual. Just when you think they're not paying attention to all the mushy stuff, they surprise you with words like "tradition". Next year we'll watch it, no matter what!

Speaking of tradition, how many of you have made the grave mistake of being a little anal about your Christmas tree? Well, if there's one thing I could ever take back, that would be it. For years, I prided (key word here "pride") myself on doing the tree "just so". You see where this is going, right? He would help me and, being the little boy he was, I'd go in after and "fix" placement of the things he put on. Well, let me tell you, it didn't go unnoticed, apparently.

This year, I said, "Come on! Let's do the tree together!". He looked at me like I had two heads. He said, "No...you'll just tell me I'm putting things in the wrong place". You can imagine how I felt, right? Lower than pond scum. So, mom decorated the damn thing by herself. I learned a great lesson that day. Be very careful what you place as a priority.

Having said that, I know what my resolution for 2010 is. It's something I can actually fulfill with some thought....to remember what my priorities are. My son had to teach me that lesson. I'm not so proud of that tree anymore, and I don't care if it looks like angry hyenas decorate it next year, he's going to be a part of it, as he should have been from the word go.

This reminds me of a funny story about my brother and mother. I remember my brother deciding that putting the tinsel on the tree a little at a time and draping it "just so" was too time consuming. So, Tommy decided to just take a handful and just toss it here and there on the tree. Well, Mom was less than impressed. She made him take it all off and do it the "right" way! So, maybe that's where I got this anal thing! In any case, the vicious cycle needs to be stopped...so next year our tree may be the most beautiful one of all. After all, isn't the season about love and family? I think I forgot that for a time.

Well, folks, enjoy your weekend. I'm off tomorrow to get tires for the beast I drive. I would have to have the monster tires...when you buy a big SUV, make sure you remember that the tires will cause you to re-mortgage your house! haha.

Did I Say That Out Loud?

I should have known...never EVER say "the snow has gone" out loud. The universe considers that a challenge. The universe won. We got slammed over the last couple days with the white stuff! Not that fluffy Christmas is in the air kind of stuff, either. Oh, no...we had to get the heavy, wet lake effect "let's drive on Crisco with glass tires" kind of snow! Great for building snowmen, terrible to drive in!

On to the "news"....hmmm, let's see....you can see I lead a fascinating life....haha. Well, I've been busy working on my jewelry pieces for the spring line. I'm having some fun working with the lighter colors and designs, but am still mixing deeper, rich colors as well. My friends used to laugh at me...my wardrobe consisted of black, white, beige, ivory, and sage green. When I wore a hot pink blouse once they about passed out. "You DO have clothes in other colors!" So, I tend to lean toward the earth tones, even in my jewelry!

So, it's back to the worktable for me...no rest for the creative! Have a wonderful day, and if you have snow, get out there and do some sledding or build a snowman! If you can't beat 'em, join 'em!

That Lull.....

It's here....that lull between Christmas and New Years! I think the downtime is great. Gives us all a chance to unwind from the Christmas hustle and bustle, and rest up for the countdown to ringing in another new year.

This past year has flown by, for sure. I don't know about you, but it seems we just got settled in the house and it's already time to toast the incoming 2010. Wow. That even sounds funny. For those of us born in the 60's or before (that's 20th century for you youngin's), we've seen alot of changes. Not all of them good! But, for the most part, I think life is going about as expected. I figure each day is a new opportunity to either "get it" or "blow it". I'm never completely sure which fork I'll take when I get up in the morning!

Well, enjoy the rest of the year, and check back for new updates. As it is with most people, there's not alot going on at the Moffatt house this week....regroup and rearm for the festivities!!

Christmas Night

Well, it is with full belly and tired body I come to you tonight! We feasted with friends and have returned home to plop. What a season, eh? All the planning, anticipating, shopping, wrapping, baking, calling, sending, worrying, juggling (finances, of course) and merry making.........I'm pooped!

This Christmas was a huge success all the way around. I'd have to say it was one of the best ones yet. We were active with friends and spoke often with family, enjoyed each other's company and scored big in the gift department! My son was thrilled with his booty and he gave me extra special gifts this year. Moms always love the handmade things the best (which stands to reason, since I am a handmade artisan! haha), and he made me two books about a Yeti that saved Christmas. How clever! They were pop-up books at that! I had a ball reading them and will treasure them forever. In fact, they will stay handy all year so I can look at them again and again.

My sister surprised me with a four DVD set of the original Johnny Weissmuller Tarzan!! You'd swear I was a four year old that got the gift they asked Santa for! I had been wanting Tarzan for so long...and not just ANY Tarzan. It had to be with Weissmuller, which I could never seem to find. Anyone that walked the earth with the dinosaurs, like me, will remember him. He was the best Tarzan, and the only one to watch as far as I'm concerned! Well, needless to say, I can't wait to veg in front of the idiot box and watch them. Truly a perfect gift.

All in all, this has been a Christmas that they portray on Hallmark Channel! Everything was perfect, even when it wasn't! Just having my son and friends at my side, and calls from my sis, made it the happiest of Christmases. I am so lucky to have made the new friends I have over the past year, and things are starting to gel here in "Hooterville". We're beginning to feel right at home in this little community.

Silent Night

So quiet, this night...there's a sense of peace all around. This Christmas Eve has been everything I dreamed it would be. Austin and I went to a little country church tonight for the Candlelight Service. I was looking for the traditions I grew up with, and went away with so much more.

We had the candles, alright, but we experienced something I've never seen. The attendance was sparse, being a small church, but we were met with open arms and the spirit of friendship. There was a laid back feeling there, and the people seemed right at home with each other. There was no hushed whispers prior to the start of the service. Quite the contrary! Everyone was enjoying lively conversation and there was merriment in the air. And why not? It is the eve of our Lord's birth after all. Why be down in the mouth?! Children were not "shh'd" for being happy and enthusiastic, which was refreshing...a far cry from my early days "in church"!

There was a manger with straw set up in front, and I assumed we'd be seeing a re-enactment of the nativity. We got much more than a simple play. Pastor Jim, with a voice that grabs and holds you, had downloaded amazing video from the internet. It's hard to describe what we were seeing...it was like a movie about the birth of Christ, but done in clips. The music was absolutely moving and included the song "Mary, Did You Know?", one of my personal favorites. I asked Jim if he would please hook me up with the link he used to download that, and when I get it, I'll post it so you can enjoy it as well. Stay tuned for that....

As the story progressed, there were speakers, including "Mary", "Joseph", "shepherds" and "kings", who, when finished reading from the Bible, went over to take their respective places in the manger. At the end of the video and story, we all went to the manger area and lit our candles. Singing commenced at that time with all of us included. I'm sure everyone was grateful I didn't sing any louder than I did. Bonnie Raitt I am not.

At the conclusion of the service, many people extended their wishes that Austin and I would come back to see them again. I'm certain we have finally found our niche in this little church. The warmth and sincerity with which we were welcomed was priceless to me. It's hard to find the right "fit" with a new church, and its members are the very heart and soul of such a place. The spirit of God was in that church tonight, and displayed itself through the members of the congregation.

Before I finally say goodnight (or good morning as the case may be at this hour!), I want you to know that my wish for all of you tonight is to find peace, both within yourself, and with family and friends. May the spirit of the season fill you with joy and contentedness throughout the new year. God Bless you all and have a wonderful Christmas Day!

Am I a Fireman Yet?

A friend just sent this to me, and I had to share it with you. Go ahead and cry. I did. It only takes a random email to remind us that we have so much to be grateful for.

In Calgary, Alberta a 26-year-old mother stared down at her 6 year old son, who was dying of terminal leukemia.

Although her heart was filled with sadness,

she also had a strong feeling of determination.

Like any parent, she wanted her son to grow up &

fulfill all his dreams. Now that was no longer possible..

the leukemia would see to that. But she still

wanted her son's dream to come true.

She took her son' s hand and asked,

'Billy, did you ever think about what you wanted

to be once you grew up?

Did you ever dream and wish what you would

do with your life?'

Mommy, 'I always wanted to be a fireman

when I grew up.'

Mom smiled back and said, 'Let's see if we can

make your wish come true..'

Later that day she went to her local fire

Department in Calgary , where she met

Fireman Bob, who had a heart as big as Alberta

She explained her son's final wish and

Asked if it might be possible

to give her 6 year-old son a ride around the block on a fire engine.

Fireman Bob said, 'Look, we can do

better than that. If you'll have your son ready at

seven o'clock Wednesday morning, we'll make

him an honorary Fireman for the whole day.

He can come down to the fire station, eat with us,

go out on all the fire calls, the whole nine yards!

And if you'll give us his sizes, we'll get a real fire uniform

for him, with a real fire hat - not a toy - one-with the emblem of the Calgary Fire Department on it, and a yellow slicker like we wear and rubber boots.'

'They're all manufactured right here in Calgary ,

so we can get them fast.'

Three days later Fireman Bob picked up Billy,

dressed him in his uniform and escorted him from his hospital bed to the waiting hook and ladder truck.

Billy got to sit on the back of the truck

and help steer it back to the fire station.

He was in heaven.

There were three fire calls in Calgary that day

and Billy got to go out on all three calls.

He rode in the different fire engines,

the Paramedic's' van,

and even the fire chief's car.

He was also videotaped for the

local news program..

Having his dream come true,

with all the love and attention that was lavished upon him, so deeply touched Billy, that he lived three months longer than any doctor thought possible.

One night all of his vital signs began to

drop dramatically and the head nurse, who believed

in the hospice concept - that no one should die alone, began to call the family members to the hospital.

Then she remembered the day Billy had spent

as a Fireman, so she called the Fire Chief and

asked if it would be possible to send a fireman

in uniform to the hospital to be with Billy as he made his transition.

The chief replied, 'We can do better than that.

We'll be there in five minutes.. Will you please do me a favor?

When you hear the sirens screaming and see the

lights flashing, will you announce over the

PA system that there is not a fire?'

'It's the department coming to see one of its finest members one more time. And will

you open the window to his room?'

About five minutes later a

hook and ladder truck arrived at the hospital and extended its ladder up to Billy's third floor open window--------

16 fire-fighters climbed up the ladder into Billy's room

With his mother's permission, they hugged him and held him and told him how much they LOVED him.

With

His dying breath,

Billy looked up at the fire chief and said,

'Chief, am I really a fireman now?'

'Billy, you are, and

The Head Chief,

Jesus, is holding your hand,' the chief said

With those words, Billy smiled and said,

'I know, He's

been holding my hand all day, and

The angels have been

Singing...'

He closed his eyes one last time.

Memories

I just got off the phone with a wonderful woman named Lisa...a Californian with a tremendously generous spirit and sense of humor (www.awhimsicalbohemian..typepad.com). We were reminiscing about times gone by and it triggered a funny memory for me.

I grew up with a Ukrainian mother and English father. The English history can wait, but the Ukrainian bit will tickle you. We were talking about how our parent(s) would speak their native language when they didn't want little ears to be privy to certain conversations. It reminded me of a story my mom told about her own childhood.

My grandmother knew a little English, but mainly spoke her native tongue to my mom and her siblings. Well, one day, while my mother was instructed to kneel and say her prayers, my grandmother was supervising. My mom started the prayer and would pause. My grandmother would say (and I'm not spelling this right) "Adalla". My mom replied, "Adalla". My grandma repeated the word, only with much more insistence.."A-DALLA". Mom..."A-DALLA". Grandma again..."A-DA-LLA!!!". So Mom tried it with real feeling now..."A-DA-LLA!!!".

Well, my grandmother was so frustrated because she thought my mom was mocking her! After swatting my mom in the noggin', Mom finally said, "Ma! I don't know what you're saying!". Get a load of this...my grandma was telling her to CONTINUE!

May this holiday season bring back to mind the wonderful, funny memories you cherish. Hold them close! For those of us who have lost the people we love, these memories are a way to bring them into our hearts at Christmas and all through the year.
